Budgeteen tracks teen allowance only when the cash arrives

Last reviewed 2 October 2026 · Part of the Budgeteen FAQ hub

Budgeteen is an allowance tracker for teens 13+ who receive cash, a gift, or another repeating payout. Name the stream, set a weekly or monthly amount, and tap Got it only when the money is in your hands. Skip if it did not land. Budgeteen will not invent cash, and the ledger stays on your phone.

Set the repeating payout

From the Budget tab, open Allowance. The screen is titled Repeating income. Name the stream — Allowance, a monthly gift from a relative, or another payout you actually expect. Enter the amount in your currency and choose weekly or monthly. Then pick when it is next due. The row stays on your phone with that name, amount, and cadence. An empty list is a valid setup: one-off gifts, gig pay, and hustle income still log from the money screen. You do not need to invent an allowance to use Learn, sims, or the week plan.

Got it, Skip, and Snooze

When the date arrives, the row reads Ready to claim. Tap Got it only if you can hold the cash. Budgeteen logs that amount as income in the allowance stream and moves the next due date forward by one weekly or monthly step. Tap Skip when the payout did not land. The next date still advances, and the confirmation is explicit: no cash added. Snooze 3 days pushes the date without logging money, for a payout that is late rather than cancelled. Remove deletes that repeating row. Income you already logged stays in the ledger until you edit or delete that entry.

Where claimed allowance meets the week

Got it writes an income entry for this week's money and raises cash on hand by the amount you received. Listing income first is also where the CFPB's monthly budget tool starts. The repeating row is the schedule. The weekly plan is still the four envelopes: Needs, Wants, Save, and Give. Pour the cash you have; the tracker does not auto-pay bills or move money to a bank. Envelope mechanics, the money health score, and the first-week loop live on How teen budgeting works in Budgeteen.

Cash on hand and safe to spend

The same screen shows cash on hand and safe to spend after overdue bills. A claim increases cash by the amount received, and safe to spend is that cash minus bills that are already late. Claiming allowance records the payout. It does not mark a bill paid. If lunch money and a late phone top-up are both in the week, safe to spend stays lower than the raw cash balance until the overdue bill is handled.

A week with no payout

Skip the occurrence, or leave the list empty. Budgeteen still opens the skills roadmap, paycheck sims, and an empty week. A teen without allowance has a full learning path. Earning stays optional. What a budgeting app for teens should handle, and every guide by goal, is on one page. Where U.S. teens' money comes from is on teen financial literacy statistics, and if you want to earn, ideas are on side hustles by age. The product direction is learn, practice, build, understand the result, then optionally earn.

Who can see the amounts

Allowance rows, claimed income, and goals stay on the device. There is no parent dashboard of dollar amounts. An optional parent invite can share a streak and which recent weeks you logged money, and it hides amounts, notes, and goals. You can turn that link off. What is Budgeteen explains the same boundary. Age, bank-account, and parent-visibility answers sit on the Budgeteen FAQ.

Allowance tracker questions

How do teens track allowance in Budgeteen?

Name the payout, enter the amount, and choose weekly or monthly. Budgeteen shows the next due date. When the cash is actually in your hands, tap Got it and that amount lands in the on-phone ledger. If the payout does not arrive, tap Skip. The next date moves forward and Budgeteen does not invent money you never received.

Does this allowance tracker need a bank account?

No. The allowance tracker in Budgeteen does not connect to a bank, debit card, or parent-funded balance. You type the allowance or gift you expect, then confirm it only when you can hold the cash. Other teen money apps often start with a family card. This one starts with the payout you get, and the record stays on your phone.

What happens if allowance does not arrive?

Tap Skip. Budgeteen rolls the next due date by the same weekly or monthly step and leaves your cash unchanged. A missed Friday is a normal teen week. You can still open Learn and an empty week plan. The tracker never adds allowance you did not receive.

Can I track a gift or a side-hustle payout, not just allowance?

Yes, if it repeats. The tracker works for any repeating payout: allowance, a monthly gift from a relative, or a weekly dog-walking client. Name the stream, choose weekly or monthly, and set the amount. Tap Got it only when the cash is in your hands, or Skip if it did not come.

Where does claimed allowance go in the weekly plan?

Got it writes the amount into this week's money on your phone. You then split that cash across Needs, Wants, Save, and Give. Those envelopes are the weekly plan, separate from the repeating allowance schedule. Nothing moves to a bank. If you share a parent invite, it still hides dollar amounts and shows only activity.
