Budgeteen Budgeteen

What is the Budgeteen app?

Last reviewed 2 October 2026 · Part of the Budgeteen FAQ hub

Bottom line: Budgeteen is a local-first money app for teens 13+ that budgets cash, gigs, and allowance on your phone — no bank account, debit card, or parent-funded account required.

Budgeteen is a financial education app for teens 13 and older. It logs allowance, gig pay, and cash, splits the week into Needs, Wants, Save, and Give envelopes, teaches money skills, and lists jobs legal at your age. It is not a bank or debit card.

What Budgeteen does on day one

In the app, pick an age band, and log the money you already have: allowance, babysitting cash, lawn pay, gifts, or a first paycheck. Budgeteen splits that week into Needs, Wants, Save, and Give envelopes and shows what is left to pour. You can open Skills for the next lesson on your roadmap and open Work for hustles and stores filtered by youth work rules; the federal rules are in the Department of Labor's Fact Sheet #43. None of that requires linking a bank or waiting for a parent to fund a card.

Repeating cash has its own walkthrough. The allowance tracker for teens covers a weekly or monthly payout, Got it when the cash is in your hands, and Skip when it does not arrive.

Who it is for

Budgeteen is for teens 13+ who want a plan before (or instead of) a fintech account. It also works for learners with no income yet: the skills roadmap, paycheck sims, and tools stay free. Earning is optional. The product direction is learn, practice, build, understand the result, then optionally earn.

What Budgeteen is not

Budgeteen is not a bank, debit card, payment processor, brokerage, or employment agency. It does not move money between people, issue cards, freeze accounts, or place jobs. Job and hustle cards are curated educational examples. Earnings ranges are illustrative. Results vary. Follow local youth employment laws and involve a parent or guardian when contracts or payments are involved.

How it differs from teen debit-card apps

Greenlight and Acorns Early sell debit cards for kids that parents manage, with limits and real-time alerts. Budgeteen starts with a ledger on your phone. A parent can receive an optional invite that shows streak and weeks active, never dollar amounts. There is no family card fee for the core loop. Full product depth lives on about Budgeteen; envelope mechanics live on how teen budgeting works in Budgeteen.

Does Budgeteen need a bank account?

No. Budgeteen does not require a bank account, debit card, or parent-funded balance. You type in the money you actually have — cash, allowance, or gig pay — and the ledger stays on your phone. Other teen money apps start with a card; Budgeteen starts with a plan.

Is Budgeteen a bank or a debit card?

What age can use Budgeteen?

Budgeteen is designed for ages 13 and older. The Work tab filters hustles and job ideas by youth work rules, including places to check at 14, 15, and 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and a parent can help set up any payout account a teen needs.
