Budgeteen Budgeteen

A budgeting app for teens that starts with the money you have

Last reviewed 30 September 2026 · Features as described on the Budgeteen homepage, FAQ and Terms

A budgeting app for teens should work before a teen has a bank account. Budgeteen is a free budgeting app for ages 13 and older. You log allowance, gifts, cash and gig pay, split the week into Needs, Wants, Save and Give, and keep the numbers on your phone. Start with the guide below that fits your week.

What a teen budgeting app has to handle

Teen money comes in clumps. Allowance lands on Friday, a mowing job pays on Saturday and a gift shows up midweek. A budgeting app built for that week has to accept cash you type in, treat an uneven week as normal, and show what is left before you spend. It also needs to cover the things adults' apps assume away: bills that repeat, savings goals, money you owe a friend, and a weekly report you can read in a minute. Most teen money apps start with a card and a parent-funded balance. That means identity checks and a dashboard of amounts. Budgeteen starts with a plan instead, so nobody needs a bank login, a card number or a Social Security number.

How Budgeteen does it

You log this week's income, and Budgeteen splits it into four envelopes: Needs, Wants, Save and Give. Each envelope shows what is left, and a money health score coaches the mix instead of locking a card. Repeating allowance is claimed only when the cash is in your hands, so the plan never counts money that did not arrive. Shift Mode times a babysitting or mowing job and writes the earnings into the same plan. The Work tab filters hustles and job ideas by age, and the Skills roadmap teaches irregular income, first paychecks, scams and how money grows in short lessons that work offline. Everything is free, with nothing to buy inside the app and no account to create. The ledger stays on your phone.

What it won't do

Budgeteen is not a bank, debit card, payment processor or employment agency. It does not move money, give a parent a spending dashboard, or guarantee earnings or hires. Listings are educational examples, and results vary. A parent who wants to see progress can get an optional parent link, which shows a streak and the skills finished but never balances, notes or goals. The teen can switch it off at any time.

Budgeting app for teens: questions

Does a teen need a bank account to use a budgeting app?

Not with Budgeteen. It is built for teens who have cash, allowance or gig pay but no bank account yet. You type in the money you actually have, and the app splits it into envelopes on your phone. Many other teen money apps start with a debit card and a parent-funded balance instead.

What age is Budgeteen's budgeting app for?

Budgeteen is designed for teens 13 and older, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Its Work tab filters hustles and job ideas by youth work rules, and it shows places to check at ages 14, 15 and 16, so the plan fits the age you are now.

Can a teen budgeting app track side-hustle money?

Budgeteen can. Shift Mode times a job such as babysitting or mowing and writes the earnings into the same weekly plan, where they are split into Needs, Wants, Save and Give. Uneven weeks are expected, not treated as an error, and a money health score coaches the mix.

Is Budgeteen's teen budgeting app free?

Yes. Every money tool, skill track and brief is included, there is nothing to buy inside the app, and there is no account to create. Budgeteen is a financial education app, not a bank or card, so there is no subscription and no balance to fund.
